Project Description

AOOT Borsky Stekolny Zavod (Borsteklo or the company) is one of Russia’s principal manufacturers of float glass for the automotive and construction industries. The company is located in the town of Bor, in the region of Nizhny Novgorod, 450 kilometers due east of Moscow. The plant operates on a 71 hectare site on the banks of the Volga River. Its two float glass furnaces were built in 1970 and 1986, and have a design capacity of 1,060 tons per day. The company is the only Russian float glass producer equipped with western technology float lines. In addition to its two float lines, Borsteklo has substantial downstream processing operations, including laminate and tempered lines. Majority controlled by a Glaverbel - led consortium of investors including IFC and EBRD, the company is seeking financing for the second stage of its planned rehabilitation/expansion project. This investment will include a cold repair to furnace #1; lengthening the furnace life; increasing capacity by 15%, improving the yield and enabling jumbo size production. The loan will also refinance the cold repair undertaken on furnace #2 in 2000 and enable the installation of a new laminate line.
