Project Description
The project comprises the doubling of the capacity of the Mozal 1 aluminium smelter, at an estimated cost of US$992 million, to produce an additional 250,000 tons per annum (tpa) of aluminium metal. The smelter is located 21km west of Mozambique''s capital, Maputo, with an associated port terminal 5km west of the main port of Maputo. Mozal 1, to which IFC has existing A and C Loan commitments totaling US$120 million, has already produced first metal and is currently nearing completion, six months ahead of schedule and about US$130 million below the budgeted project cost of US$1,340 million. Mozal 1 was designed with the Mozal 2 expansion in mind, and there is space in the existing site for the installation of duplicate potline, anode baking, and casthouse facilities. Outside the main site, the only significant additional facilities required will be a second ship unloader and storage facilities (all to be constructed within the existing boundaries of Mozal''s quay) at the port to handle the extra raw materials, and an extra 132kV transmission line from the nearby substation.
