Project Description

The project involves the rehabilitation and operation of a container and general cargo terminal located in the Port of Salvador, in northeast Brazil. The Terminal will be operated under a 25-year lease signed in March 2000 with CODEBA, the former operator of the Terminal, and the current port authority for the State of Bahia. The project includes the purchase of equipment, including portainer and auxialliary equipment, paving of yard areas, and building of a warehouse and administration buildings. The civil works are expected to be completed by August 2001. The equipment will be bought through 2002, with most of it being acquired by January 2001. Under the lease contract, CODEBA has the responsibility to provide power and water supplies to the Terminal (Tecon Salvador is planning to establish water and electrical power connections to the existing public systems, and has included the costs of these in their investment program), as well as to provide navigational access to the Terminal berths and to maintain the current depths through dredging, as necessary. Currently employing 120 staff, Tecon Salvador believes as many as 150 people will be employed when the facility reaches full operation. In addition, OGMOSA, a labor clearinghouse that manages 600 union workers (stevedores, yard workers, and security agents) for the entire Port of Salvador, will continue to provide the necessary casual labor needs.
