Project Description
The project is targeted at providing capacity building and technical assistance to financial institutions to build their sustainability and strengthen their position as key actor for financial inclusion.
Development Results
The APEC CEMAC Financial Institution Capacity Building Project aims to enhance the ability of financial institutions in the CEMAC region to provide more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable financial services that better respond to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly in high-potential but underserved sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, and supply chains.
By strengthening the technical knowledge and operational capacity of banks and financial actors through targeted training and advisory sessions on emerging financial products—including agri-finance, supply chain finance, mini-grid financing, factoring, leasing, and climate risk management—the project seeks to lay the groundwork for financial institutions to expand their portfolios and increase financing to SMEs, especially those currently excluded from the formal financial system.
This initiative is expected to contribute to long-term development outcomes such as increased job creation, improved financial inclusion, enhanced economic diversification, and greater resilience to climate risks. It will also support the development of a more dynamic, innovative, and integrated financial sector across CEMAC member states by promoting harmonized financial practices and encouraging new financial product development.
The project aligns with World Bank Group and IFC strategies to catalyze private sector investment, strengthen financial infrastructure, support MSME development, and address fragility and conflict by building local capacity and supporting inclusive economic growth in a region where over 70% of the population lives in fragile and conflict-affected situations.
