Project Description

Voltalia S.A. (“Voltalia”) and International Finance Corporation (“IFC”) entered into an agreement under which IFC will support the development of a pipeline of new power-to-mine opportunities in selected countries. These include Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, DRC, Ghana, Guinea, Madagascar, Mauritania, South Africa and Zambia. This engagement aims to structure clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions for the mining sector, which is one of the most energy-intensive industries worldwide. This high energy demand is today primarily met through the burning of fossil fuels rather than renewable sources. This also contributes to the objectives of Mission 300 and IFC’s engagement towards Distributed Renewable Energy solutions, in addition to Voltalia’s mission to improve global environment while fostering local development.. Through this collaboration, IFC will work closely with Voltalia, finance feasibility studies and review bankability considerations of the proposed solutions

E & S Information

Key E&S risks associated with the development and operation of power-to-mine projects could include physical and/or economic resettlement, potential adverse impacts on biodiversity, and labor and working conditions among others. IFC will provide E&S support during the feasibility phase to proactively identify project specific risks and impacts, and the required management and mitigation plans (such as E&S impact assessments, Resettlement Action Plans, Biodiversity Action Plans etc.) as required. IFC’s support will be aligned with the requirements and objectives of the Sustainability Framework, including the Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability.
